The mosque, which had a dome when it was built for the first time, was demolished as it had been damaged by earthquakes, and only its original mihrab (niche) and minaret have survived. This historic church was called Hagia Sophia of the Latins. Burnt time after time in the 1600s, the church had been converted to mosque at one stage by Sultan Mustafa II. The present church was rebuilt in 1724. The church was demolished again while expanding the avenue in the 1900s and rebuilt in 1906 at its current location.
